De La Hoya in Rehab

Retired boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya has entered a California rehab facility to be treated for a substance abuse problem, TMZ reported Saturday.

Sources told TMZ that De La Hoya checked into the rehab facility within the last few weeks. The name and location of the facility and the nature of his substance abuse problem were not immediately known.

The 1992 Olympic Gold Medal winner has been active on Twitter in recent weeks.

On Friday, De La Hoya wrote, "Take a deep breathe and let out all that anger that makes you hate.it really is going to be o.k." and "Stop finding excuses not to live. life is controlled by what you make of it and not of what it makes of you."

De La Hoya had a career record of 39-6 and held several championship belts before retiring in 2009.

In just about any era, Manny Pacquiao would be considered a great fighter. He wouldn’t have had a chance with the aforementioned greats in Duran, Hearns, or Leonard, but outside of that group he would have been quite successful. When I said that boxing was fixed, I was alluding to the fact that I believe, in my opinion Pacquiao is not fighting fair. There are many people that think Manny has jacked his body up with red blood cells, also known as “Blood Doping” while training.

I WONDER WHY PACQUIAO BEATS UP BIGGER GUYS WITH EASE?

The extra blood cells from the use of EPO (Erithropoyetin) can increase your oxygen level anywhere from 30 to 45%. Of course, this allows you to train 45% harder, recover 45% faster, and thus perform 45% better. As somebody studying medicine, I’ve been told there is no perfected test to determine whether an athlete is on EPO. In the old days, before the steroid era, “Blood Doping” was done through transfusions. Until recently accurate testing has been difficult because the EPO made in the lab is virtually identical to the naturally occurring form and there are no firmly established normal ranges for EPO in the body.

The bottom line is that none of us knows what goes on behind closed doors in a fighter’s training camp. Now, I’m not saying Manny didn’t deserve to win against the almost elderly for a boxer Mosley, who turns 40 in a few months, as he pitched a shutout on almost everybody’s scorecards. Pac’s a good man that has done a lot for his country, has a lot of faith in God and is without question a great fighter. But that still doesn’t change the fact that I think the sport of boxing is fixed.

Was St. Patrick Irish?
According to History.com, St. Patrick was actually born in Britain. At the age of 16, he was captured by Irish raiders and transported across the sea to Ireland. After spending six years in captivity, Patrick escaped, traveled back to Britain, and trained to become a priest. Once his training was complete, he returned to Ireland "to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to begin to convert the Irish."

Did St. Patrick rid Ireland of snakes?
Sorry, but no. It is true that there are no snakes in Ireland these days, but there never were any. National Geographic explains that because Ireland is surrounded by chilly waters, there is no way snakes could migrate there in the first place. National Geographic speculates that the snakes could be symbolic of the "pagan ways" that St. Patrick drove out of Ireland.

Did Patrick use clovers while preaching?
Legend says that he did. Catholic.org writes that Patrick used a three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the locals. However, other sites call this story just a myth. And, by the way, a bit of trivia regarding four leaf clovers. They are indeed rare, but they aren't exactly one in a million. It is estimated that there is one four leaf clover for every 10,000 three-leaf ones.

Patrick's lasting legacy
According to author Thomas Cahill, Patrick may have been the first person in recorded history to speak out against slavery. In an interview with American Catholic, Cahill remarks: "The papacy did not condemn slavery as immoral until the end of the 19th century, but here is Patrick in the fifth century seeing it for what it is. I think that shows enormous insight and courage and a tremendous 'fellow feeling'—the ability to suffer with other people, and to understand what other people's suffering is like."

Add Rafael Marquez's name to the growing list of people who think Mexico will surprise critics in this summer's World Cup.

"Realistically, I think the team can go really far," said Marquez, Mexico's captain in the last two World Cups. "We have that hunger, that desire. It's the mental aspect we have to work on.

"A quality soccer team we have. We just have to work on the mental toughness."

Oh, and getting a little more playing time for budding 21-year-old stars Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela might be a good idea too.

On Wednesday, Hernandez and Vela came off the bench to score goals three minutes apart, sparking Mexico to a 2-0 win over New Zealand in a pre-World Cup friendly played before a vocal – if chilly — sellout crowd of 90,526 at the Rose Bowl.

It was one of the largest crowds to watch a soccer match in the Rose Bowl in more than a decade. And in the first half both the crowd, and Mexico Coach Javier Aguirre, got a chance to see many of Mexico's top European-based players, nine of whom were called home for one last look before preliminary Cup rosters are due.

It wasn't an impressive tryout. Although the imports clearly outplayed the outmanned New Zealanders, so many crisp passes went to empty areas or skipped by their intended targets that at one point midway through the first half, striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco threw his hands up in frustration and admonished a teammate.

That all ended when Aguirre emptied his bench to start the second half, sending Hernandez in for Blanco and Vela in for Aldo De Nigris. The difference showed on Mexico's first rush at New Zealand keeper Glen Moss, when Hernandez directed a header just wide. But he didn't miss the next time when, in the 54th minute, he took long pass from Carlos Salcido and headed it into the net.

For Hernandez, the score was his third in just more than a half of playing time on the national team's pre-World Cup schedule. The first two came a week ago when Mexico opened its World Cup preparations with a 5-0 rout of Bolivia. And with back-to-back strong performances Hernandez has gone from a player who, four months ago, wasn't considered a candidate for the national team to one who now may have an invitation wrapped up.

Three minutes later Vela, called home from his English club Arsenal, doubled Mexico's lead on a pretty goal. Vela, who turned 21 two days ago, put on an impressive display of dribbling just to reach the six-meter box, but once there he deftly left-footed the ball around the baffled Moss and into the net.

A World Cup qualifier this year for only the second time in their history, the All Whites were at less than full strength Wednesday, missing defender Ryan Nelsen, the team captain, who was out with a knee injury, and fellow defender Ivan Vicelich, who was serving a suspension.

It’s a very sad for many Mexicans all over the world. Singer Vicente Fernández Gomez has died at the age of 69. Simply known as Vicente Fernández, he was a Mexican folk singer and actor. Many knew him as el "El idolo de Mexico" (the idol of Mexico) and "el rey" (the king) throughout the Latin world, Vicente Fernandez, who started his career singing for tips on the street, has become a Mexican cultural icon, recording more than 50 albums and contributing to 40 movies. He is the father of singer Alejandro Fernández. Although less well known to English-speaking audiences, he has consistently filled stadiums and venues throughout his 35-plus years of performing. His repertoire is pure ranchera, a style described by Daniel Chang of the Miami Herald as representing "the Mexico of old--a way of life romanticized by rural ranches, revolution, and philandering caballeros. He had sold over 50 million copies worldwide.
